"Inspired by" with Heather

I've been trying to read more lately, it's something I always promise myself that I'll do - and after last week's post about time, well, it only seems fitting that I share a few of the novels I've actually had the time to indulge in! I'll be honest though, I'm a seasoned reader. I have a library card and I'm not afraid to use it. I'll often choose the actual book over the Kindle version because I prefer to turn the pages. If I could, I'd get married in the New York Public Library. In short, I am a less stylish version of Carrie Bradshaw without the fabulous rent-controlled Manhattan apartment.
I thought this week's post could feature a few books I enjoyed as well as a suggested cocktail to sip on while reading. Feel free to leave your drink suggestions or a recommended read as well!

The Secret Book of Frida Kahlo: A Novel by F. G. Haghenbeck

This bright and colorful work weaves a fictional tale of Frida Kahlo, the Mexican painter, based on real notebooks found in her home in Coyoacán, a borough of Mexico City.
[Best paired with tequila. The traditional way to consume is straight up, no lime or salt. Try this if you don't plan on making it past the first ten pages. Otherwise, make it a margarita, with a bit of fresh squeezed lime and orange juice and a drizzle of agave syrup.]

Gone Girl by Gillian Flynn
This book is intense, a serious page-turner. A woman disappears on her wedding anniversary, her husband is under suspicion, and a whole nation is captivated by it. The writing is clever - I couldn't put it down!
[Best paired with a Dark and Stormy. 2 oz dark rum, 10 oz ginger beer, splash of lime juice and a lime wedge to garnish.]

Just Kids by Patti Smith
-The story of performer, Patti Smith and photographer Robert Mapplethorpe as recalled by Patti. This book is iconic. It's a beautifully written tribute to the time period as well as a gritty yet romantic look into Smith and Mapplethorpe's passionate relationship.
[Best paired with a Manhattan - cherries optional.]
